Adenoidectomy

Adenoidectomy is a surgical operation to remove the adenoids (adenoid vegetations). The adenoids are the pharyngeal tonsil, a mass of lymphoid tissue located in the roof of the nasopharynx (behind the nose, above the soft palate). Normally, adenoids serve a protective function as part of the immune system, helping to defend a child's body against infections. However, in children aged 2 to 10, they often become significantly enlarged (hypertrophied) in response to frequent colds and other factors. Enlarged adenoids can block the nasal passages and the openings of the Eustachian tubes, causing a whole range of problems: persistent nasal congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep (apnea), frequent ear infections (otitis media), sinusitis, hearing loss, and even improper development of the facial skeleton ('adenoid facies'). When conservative treatment fails and the adenoids become a source of serious health problems, adenoidectomy is the only effective method of treatment.

Main Goal of Adenoidectomy

The main goal is to restore normal nasal breathing and prevent complications by completely removing the adenoid tissue, allowing children to breathe freely, sleep well, and develop properly.

Find answers to common questions about this procedure

When using modern endoscopic methods (shaver, coblation), where the surgeon removes all adenoid tissue under full visual control, the risk of true recurrence (regrowth) is extremely low. With the old, 'blind' method, incomplete removal was more common, which led to recurrences.
